Sick, Sick, and Sicker

January was not good to us. It rarely is. Why? Cold season. And it hit us bad. BAD.

It started a few weeks ago when I came down with a cold that knocked me down for a few days. Then, Peter caught it and he spent a couple days out of work. And then the kids got something even worse.

It was a looonng week of fevers, coughs, and general unhappiness. We watched many, many hours of pirates, Daniel Tiger (Jude pronounces it "danville tiger"), and Curious George. By Wednesday, Eleanor reached the "I'm just gonna scream phase" so I took her to urgent care, where she was diagnosed with a double ear infection. At least there are antibiotics for that!

sick, but still shopping
and pirating
To make matters more stressful, I had my big half marathon that Saturday. After training for 12 weeks and working my butt off, there was NO WAY I was gonna miss that run. So I chugged vitamin C like I was getting scurvy and washed my hands almost constantly. I'm not normally a germaphobe at all, but I scrubbed every surface all week long, just trying to contain the germs. But of course, as it always is in mom-land, the sickness hit me too. By Friday I was bedridden. Peter kindly offered to stay home and help with the kids so I could rest as much as possible. I was still really determined to race.

After many fervent prayers, a lot of cold medicine, and even a priesthood blessing from my dear husband, Saturday morning came and I got up, and went to run my race. I was definitely not 100%, but it was bearable. I took a lot of meds, said a lot more prayers, and by some miracle I finished my race!

The next day I was totally bedridden again, but still. I reached my goal! Yay! Half marathon complete!

Now, three weeks after the beginning of the plague, we are finally getting back to normal. Just some lingering running noses, thankfully. My house, however, is still a disaster zone. Basically nothing got cleaned or put away for 3 weeks. Slowly, I'm tackling the mess and putting our lives back together. I've missed my usual blogging, but now I should be able to get back into it. I'm also super nervous for the next few months; I know more colds are coming, it's inevitable with kids.

Oh, and I have another half marathon coming up in two weeks. Because apparently I'm taking crazy pills or something.

  1. Dear Linda, I am loving catching up on your blog. I am so glad you made it through the sickies. I am so sorry. If I was close by, I would definetly bring you chicken soup and watch your kids so you could rest and get better. But...too far away. That is the hardest part of raising kids. Mothers just can't get sick and no one can really replace you (being how popular you are!). I am so glad that you were able to do your 1/2 marathon. You deserve more than a medal! They should give you a day pass for full spa experience which includes lunch and pool time and shopping including the $$. or maybe even a weekend at a resort for recovery. You are amazing that you did another race. Good for you. Nice that Peter could take one day off so you could get better. Sounded like a nasty virus! Yikes!
